General Motor’s Super Cruise Wins MotorTrend’s Tech of the Year

General Motors launched its Super Cruise feature back in 2017 as the industry’s first hands-free driving system. Since then, it has continued to evolve into the advanced product it is today. It recently won MotorTrend’s Best Tech of 2025 for driver assistance, which recognizes the cutting-edge technology that evolves the driving experience. What makes Super Cruise stand out from its competitors? Jeff Belzer’s Chevrolet is excited to dive into its features.
What is Super Cruise?
Super Cruise is GM’s ADAS (advanced driver assistance system) that allows drivers to travel hands-free on certain roads and highways. Note that it is not a fully autonomous system – it can handle steering, braking, and accelerating to stay in its lane and maintain a safe distance from the vehicle ahead of you. However, it is meant to be a driving tool, not a replacement, so it uses a combination of cameras and sensors to ensure the driver is still attentive to the road.
Why Did Super Cruise Win Tech of the Year?
- Real-Time Monitoring: Like we said above, this is not a complete takeover of the driving experience, it is meant to enhance the driving experience. SuperCruise uses cameras and sensors to monitor the driver. If it senses that the driver is not paying attention, it will sound an alert.
- Advanced Features: With simply flicking your turn signal, your Chevrolet can make a lane change, and once you pass the vehicle, will return your vehicle to the correct lane. We see many ADAS systems that can change one lane, but not return to the lane you were previously in. Super Cruise even works with a trailer.
- Zone/Map Coverage: Chevrolet continues to expand the network of roads that Super Cruise is available on. In 2022, there were 400,000 miles in the Super Cruise network, and over the past few years, Chevrolet has stepped it up. By the end of 2025, that number will expand to 750,000 miles.

Ultimately, the Super Cruise feature is more trustworthy than the other driver assistance systems out there. MotorTrend looks at innovation, user experience, value, usefulness, and a regard for safety and privacy when making their decision. Super Cruise came out on top in all those areas.
